China has approved importing a new drug for HIV patients.

China's State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) on Friday announced the country's approval of importation of a new drug, which was developed by United States-based pharmaceutical giant Abbott Laboratories to treat patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

Early laboratory tests by British scientists at University of Manchester have shown that the drug used to treat HIV could be developed into a cream that may prevent cervical cancer in women.

Researchers on Friday said test-tube studies have shown that the drug lopinavir used for combating HIV also killed human papilloma virus (HPV), the virus that causes cervical cancer

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves a new tablet formulation of Abbott's HIV protease inhibitor Kaletra (lopinavir/ritonavir), which will allow adult patients to take fewer pills with or without food as part of their treatment regimen.

Additionally, there will be no refrigeration requirements for the tablets. These benefits were not available with the old Kaletra capsules. The FDA says the standard daily doses of new Kaletra tablets and capsules provide similar drug levels in the blood
