Hospital Says Pharmacy Error Led To Heparin Overdose Deaths Of Babies

A Texas hospital here has acknowledged an error occurred in its pharmacy that caused the death of two newborn twins.

Study: Test-Tube Babies As Healthy As Naturally-Conceived Peers

Babies conceived through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) or test tubes might be just as healthy as those conceived naturally, a new study says. Researchers from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, said that contrary to popular belief, the IVF treatment does not increase the risk of developmental problems during early infancy.

Lead researcher Dr. Karin Middelburg said the study assessed spontaneous movements, known as general movements, in 125 infants conceived following IVF at three months of age and compared then with a control group of 90 babies born naturally to sub-fertile couples. Vitamin A Supplement At Birth Reduces Infant Mortality Rate

Infants in the developing world should be given a single, oral dose of vitamin A to cut down their risk of death by 15 percent, a new study suggests. According to a study conducted by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, vitamin A supplement given at birth can also improve infant survival within the first 6 months of life.

The study enrolled 15,937 newborns from rural communities in northwest Bangladesh, where over 90 percent of babies are born at home. Half were randomly selected to receive a 50,000 IU dose of vitamin A within few hours of birth, while the other half received a placebo

Study Finds Link Between Brain Chemical And Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Defective signalling of a chemical called serotonin in the brain may be at the root cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), Italian researchers have found.

Scientists from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Monterotondo, Italy, genetically modified lab mice to produce low levels of the brain-signalling protein serotonin. After being exposed to slight external temperature changes, the rodents suddenly died because their bodies could not adjust, researchers said

FDA Expands Salmonella Investigaton Beyond Tomatoes

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is planning to widen its search in the salmonella outbreak investigation by including other produce items on its list of suspects.

The decision to include other fresh produce commonly consumed with tomatoes comes as the FDA is under growing pressure to step up efforts to trace the source of the contamination. The salmonella outbreak has sickened at least 869 people, including 107 who have been hospitalized, in 36 states and Washington, D.C
