The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved ERBITUX(R) (Cetuximab), for the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck and is the only treatment of its kind approved.
Kie-Kian Ang, M.D., Ph.D., from The University of Texas says, "This is an important milestone as ERBITUX is the first FDA approved therapy for head and neck cancer patients in more than 30 years."
The agency initially approved Erbitux in 2004 to treat colorectal cancer, and was at the center of the scandal of Stewart and Im Clone founder Sam Waskal.
The agency says the drug is meant to be used in combination with radiation or by itself in patients whose cancer has spread despite chemotherapy treatments.
Peter R. Dolan, Chief Executive Officer, Bristol-Myers Squibb says, "ERBITUX represents an important new option for potentially thousands of patients fighting head and neck cancer, a serious disease for which there is significant unmet medical need."
