| Researchers say they've found a link between smoking and cervical cancer. They say smoking along with the human papillomavirus, or HPV, may work together to increase the risk of the cancer. The Swedish study found that women who were infected with HPV are six times more likely to develop cancer than women who don't have the virus | | Only 40 percent of women ages 18 to 75 have ever heard of the human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and less than 20 percent knew it can cause cervical cancer. More than 3,000 women participated in the 2005 Health Information National Trends Survey. 64 percent of them knew that HPV was sexually transmitted and 79 percent knew it could cause abnormal Pap smears | | The European Union has endorsed a cervical cancer vaccine called Gardasil. British medical doctors say the vaccine could prevent about 3,000 cancers annually in the UK alone. The vaccine will be administered to girls and women aged from nine to twenty-six.
