Upon notice from the FDA, Hill's has issued a voluntary recall on the pet food by notifying all veterinarians, as it is only sold through their offices.
Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc. (Topeka, KS) is now also planning to conduct its own testing as well.
After outbreaks of other contaminated pet foods were recently discovered, investigations made by the FDA have persisted to detect any further problems.
The "FDA recognizes that pets are very important to the American people and our sympathies go out to those who have lost their beloved pets," stated Stephen Sundlof, D.V.M., director of the Center for Veterinary Medicine, FDA.
The affected products are labeled with UPC codes 52742 and 42770 for 4 lb. bags distributed in the U.S. and Canada and UPC codes 52742 and 42790 for 10 lb. bags in the U.S. and Canada.
The FDA advises consumers to immediately discontinue the use of the named product and to consult with their veterinarians if their pet should show any signs of kidney-related illness. Signs of a kidney or renal illness include appetite loss, lethargy and vomiting.
It was determined that Hill's Pet Nutrition manufactured this particular product, Prescription Diet m/d Feline, early in 2007, with the use of the same wheat gluten as that supplied to Menu Foods, which had already caused the recent illnesses and/or deaths of pets from eating the contaminated products.
