Forskolin, which is sold in health food stores and promoted as an allergy and fat loss aid has the ability to reduce the urinary tract infections in the bladder that relapse even after treatment with antibiotics as it kills the bacteria that cause 90 percent of infections in the bladder.
Nearly 90 percent of the urinary tract infections in the bladder are caused by the E. coli bacteria and women are far more susceptible to them than men. When a patient is treated with an antibiotic, the infection often re-occurs.
The Duke University team carried out a series of experiments in mice, and found that Forskolin extracts hiding colonies of bacteria, making them susceptible to antibiotic treatment.
The research. which is published in the current issue of the journal Nature Medicine, noted that when Forskolin was injected directly into the bladder or administered intravenously; the herb flushed out more than 75 percent of the hiding E. coli.
The scientists are now looking at the possibility of using this miracle herb on humans and see its effects. The experiments will combine the use of Forskolin and antibiotics.
