Scientists Can Read The Brain's 'Thoughts'

A U.S. study demonstrates they can tell what images people are looking at or what sounds they are listening to based off of their brain scans.

Scientists use electrodes placed inside the skull to monitor the responses of brain cells in the auditory cortex of two surgical patients as they watched a clip of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". They used this data to accurately predict the FMRI signals from the brains of another 11 healthy patients who watched the clip while lying in a scanner.

Switching Breast Cancer Medicine Can Be Beneficial

Scientists at the Vienna Medical University in Austria say varying tamoxifen therapy with a drug called anastrozole produces better results in older women past menopause, in the early stages of their breast cancer.

"Switching from tamoxifen to anastrozole after two years is more beneficial for the patients than staying on tamoxifen," Professor Raimund Jakesz, the lead researcher, says in an interview.

Stem Cells May Be Found In Placentas

In what may be a less controversial alternative to stem cells from human embryos, scientists may be able to harvest the cells from placentas saved during childbirth.

They found primitive cells in a part of the placenta called the amnion, which were able to form a variety of cell types and which look similar to embryonic stem cells, according to the Associated Press.
