Supermarket operator Safeway Inc.on Thursday announced that it has received a notice from the U.S. Department of Agriculture warning it may have received raw ground beef products affected with a strain of Salmonella Newport.

The USDA has suggested the consumers to discard the ground beef products purchased between September 19 and November 5 from any of the stores owned by Safeway Inc.

The company reported that it has received products from five states including California, Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada and New Mexico.

According to the reports, USDA has found some association between the beef products and 38 illnesses reported from Arizona, California, Idaho and Nevada, the Bloomberg reported.

The Pleasanton-based company added on Thursday's notice that it was not preparing to recall all the ground beef in Safeway stores but only specific batch products.

Salmonella Newport is considered as a bacterium that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness including diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps within three days of consumption.

Food contaminated with animal feces leads to Salmonella Newport, which can be life-threatening in some cases.
