The restaurants at the lodge have been temporarily closed after the Health Department found out that some workers were sick. The patrons were given hand sanitizer upon entering the hotel and water park. The drinking water and water in the pools have been tested negative for bacteria.
The Health Department is still waiting on the laboratory tests confirming what causes the illness. They believe that this is an outbreak of a contagious norovirus that is connected to handling of food and contaminated food or water. It can be transmitted directly by contact or by touching contaminated surfaces.
Norovirus is generally not considered serious for the general population and the illness usually lasts one to two days although young children, the elderly, and "those with chronic underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes, may develop more severe complications and should consult with their health care provider," according to a statement from the state Health Department.
