Gorton's Incorporated voluntarily recalled about a thousand cases of frozen fish in 10 states on Friday after a Pennsylvania customer reported finding pill-like substance in it. The company is conducting a laboratory test to confirm the nature of the pills. Results are expected early next week.

The product included in this recall was produced on October 16, 2007 and distributed to retail outlets in Alabama, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

The pills were first discovered by Tracy Rowan and her 9-year-old daughter of New Freedom on Sunday. She called police to report that she bit into one of the pills, which were beige and aspirin-size.

Jud Reis, vice president of marketing for the Gloucester, Mass.-based Gorton said the company is conducting a full investigation to determine the source of pills.

Tracy bought the fish at a Giant store off Mount Airy Road in Shrewsbury, York County. Since then, that store has pulled all fillets with the same lot number off the shelves.

The company released a statement saying, "Customers who may have purchased this product can visit the store with a receipt for a full refund."

The recall is for Gorton's 6 Crispy Battered Fish Fillets, 11.4 ounces. The UPC Code is No. 44400157770, with a date code of 7289G1 and a best-if-used-by date of April 2009. Consumers who purchased the fish can call Gorton's at 800-896-9479.
