The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising consumers not to purchase or consume Total Body Formula, a dietary supplement after dangerously high amounts of the mineral selenium was found in them.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDA), the FDA and state health departments are investigating more than a hundred cases of acute poisoning from the products. The selenium found in them was as much as 200 times or more the amount listed on the products' labels.

The Woodstock, Ga.-based company has voluntarily recalled two drinkable dietary supplements in the flavors of Tropical Orange and Peach Nectar, or Total Body Mega Formula in the Orange/Tangerine flavor. The liquid dietary supplement products may cause severe adverse reactions, including significant hair loss, muscle cramps, diarrhea, joint pain and fatigue.

The FDA investigated the products and found extremely up to 40,800 micrograms of selenium per recommended serving. It is more than 200 times the amount of selenium per serving indicated on the products' labels.

Selenium is a mineral that occurs naturally in many foods and water and is thought to support the immune system. Most people get adequate amounts of it by eating a typical diet. The recalled products were distributed to retailers or sold through direct mail order to stores and customers in at least 15 states.
