The world's largest charity has made another stunning donation in the field of medical research and funding. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced Monday a grant of $83 million dollars to fight malaria which kills an estimated one million people every year.

The money is being slated for use in discovering stronger vaccinations, providing more vaccinations on a per area basis and funding research to help awareness and containment. All totaled, the Gates Foundation has already pledged around $765 million dollars to fight malaria alone.

In a statement made to the Associated Press, co-chair of the Gates Foundation, Melinda Gates said: "The continuing toll of malaria is a moral outrage - we would not allow it in the U.S., and we should not allow it anywhere."

Malaria, unlike polio, has proven resilient to vaccination efforts and made some immunization efforts ineffective. Each year, the parasitic virus infects anywhere from 300 to 500 million people each year, of which more than 1 million will die.

The Gates Foundation is also working with health officials especially in Africa to better coordinate vaccination efforts. Almost 90% of the mortality rate from malaria occurs in Africa alone.
