A French parliamentary panel recommended the banning of smoking in offices and public areas, such as cafes and restaurants.

According to The Associated Press, a ban could result in fierce resistance from a public that is accustomed to lenient smoking laws.

The panel stressed that secondhand smoke kills 3,000 to 5,000 people in France every year.

The panel said in its report, "The status-quo is not acceptable."

Other European countries have instituted bans. They include the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, and Spain.
