After New South Wales, the influenza epidemic seems to be ravaging Queensland, with a four-year-old boy dying in Brisbane's Mater Hospital on Tuesday from suspected Influenza A.

Dr Christine Selvey, Queensland's senior director of communicable diseases has asked parents to be on the lookout for symptoms such as fever, drowsiness, cough and possible vomiting and diarrhea. Parents have been advised to seek early medical attention for children showing signs of respiratory illness and the flu.

She said young children are more susceptible to the effects of the flu.

She said, "He had been unwell for a few days and then he deteriorated quite rapidly over about 24 hours or so."

"Queensland Health is renewing its call to parents, warning them that it is flu season, that young children are susceptible to influenza."

Queensland Health has recorded 1,078 cases of flu so far this year, twice as many as in previous years and has advised all people with flu to stay away from others so the epidemic does not't spread.
