| The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) in the UK, issued a decree for commercial poultry keepers to register their flocks as part of an initiative, backed by the industry, to raise surveillance of the avian influenza virus. DEFRA already has a detailed contingency plan in the event of an outbreak but this new move, announced today by the Prime Minister and the president of the National Farmers' Union (NFU), will further reinforce protection against any future outbreak of the disease | | Obesity is one of the major health concerns afflicting both children and adults in the United States today. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) releases results indicating children should not view more than two hours of television a day. However, most children in the U.S. watch an average of 2-3 hours of television a day, and many children have TVs in their bedrooms. Experts say children are typically inactive while watching television and often snack on unhealthy foods | | The House has approved the "cheeseburger bill," preventing people from suing restaurants and food sellers for obesity-related problems, suggesting the House feels the waistline results of bad meal choices is not the fault of food sellers. By a vote of 307-119, The House easily approved the measure | | Eli Lilly and Co. warns about liver-related problems with its depression drug, Cymbalta. A new label for the antidepressant, known generically as duloxetine, also includes reports of hepatitis, jaundice and other liver-related problems in patients using the drug, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says on its Web site | | "Our research shows that consumers are familiar with Clean, Separate, Cook and Chill, the core Fight BAC! food safety recommendations, but they need more guidance about how to do these properly," says Partnership for Food Safety Education Chairman, Tim Hammonds | |
