According to Margaret Chan, WHO director-general, they have been receiving monthly almost 200 cases of contaminated food not only from China but from other member states as well.
"I have to say that food safety is a big problem for both developed and developing countries," Chan told a news briefing, adding that the WHO was working with countries to strengthen their regulatory frameworks.
China has a big problem in terms of food and health concerns.
There are many China-made food products that are banned from being distributed because these are found to be positive from harmful chemicals.
The WHO's department of food safety said, "China has realized some time ago the need for updating its food safety system. It takes a long time to update a system, not only for China. After the BSE crisis, it took the UK a long time."
