Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter praised on Saturday the local health officials' response to a salmonella outbreak that has made dozens of people sick. Health officials are tracing the source.

As of Saturday, the outbreak had led to 183 cases of salmonella, 57 were confirmed by laboratory testing and nine people were hospitalized. More people are expected to get sick because of salmonella's incubation period

Massachusetts Reports Four Cases Of Pediatric Flu-Related Deaths In March

State health officials said yesterday that four Massachusetts children have died of the flu this month.

The Department of Public Health reports that a 12-year-old girl from Worcester County died Sunday from complications of flu, two days after a 15-year-old died of bacterial flu- related pneumonia. These two recent deaths, however, were healthy children before coming down with the flu. The first two influenza deaths happened in a 6-year-old and a 14-year who had significant underlying medical problems

Oswego Student's Death May Be Due To Bacterial Meningitis

The Oswego County and New York State Health Department are investigating the death of a SUNY Oswego student Friday morning, in a likely a case of bacterial meningococcal meningitis. Craig Schiesser, an18-year-old freshman, was taken to the Oswego Hospital emergency room the same morning.

As a result, the school's president, Deborah Stanley sent out an alert to those persons who were in close contact with the infected student within the past 10 days are at risk of infection

More Than 1.27 Million Paraguayans Vaccinated Affter Outbreak Of Yellow Fever

Following the outbreak of the deadly yellow fever in Paraguay, more than 1.27 million residents have now been vaccinated, the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) has reported. All of Paraguay's 18 departments have received vaccines, with as much as 83 percent of the population in Asuncion, the capital.

According to the last update issued by WHO on Friday, the number of confirmed cases across Paraguay has risen by six to 22. So far the disease has taken the toll of six lives while another 12 suspected cases are under investigation by health authorities

CDC Tosses Out Old Doses Of Smallpox Vaccine

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday announced that it has destroyed 12 million doses of Dryvax, the original smallpox vaccine. Other health departments and the military were also advised to do the same by Feb. 29.

Dryvax - produced by scraping virus off the skin of infected calves is now replaced by a new-generation smallpox vaccine, ACAM2000. The new live, vaccinia virus smallpox vaccine was licensed for use in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration in August 2007. It is derived from plaque purification cloning from Dryvax
