Several drugs used to treat attention deficit disorder, including Dexedrine and Ritalin, must include new warning information, the Food and Drug Administration said Monday. The FDA said the new warnings include possible risk of sudden death, serious heart problems, aggression, mania, psychotic behavior, stunted growth, seizures and vision problems.

Food and Drug Administration spokeswoman Susan Bro told Reuters she could not confirm whether the ADHD drugs Concerta and Strattera will also have to carry the warnings.

A letter from GlaxoSmithKline, the maker of Ritalin, advising doctors about the new warnings was made public Monday. The letter said heart problems were given a boxed warning - the FDA's most serious warning. Psychotic behavior, stunted growth, seizures and vision problems were given non-boxed warnings, the letter said.

Bro could not confirm whether the heart warning was boxed.

Adderall, another ADHD drug, already includes a warning that it can cause heart problems if misused, and Strattera already includes a warning that its users may have suicidal thoughts.
