The New Jersey-based company was accused of harvesting body parts from cadavers without family permission. It was also accused of neglecting to screen the parts for disease, reports The New York Times HealthDay News
Biomedical Tissue Services sent body parts to hospitals in Illinois, North Carolina, Texas, Canada and possibly Europe and Asia. The parts included tissue from "Masterpiece Theater" host Alistair Cooke.
Authorities have advised dozens of patients who received tissue transplants at five Chicago hospitals to test for possible infection. However, health officials say the risk of infection is minimal, reports The Associated Press
New York authorities are investigating the Fort Lee, New Jersey company. The FDA has ordered all tissue products from the company to be recalled.
The attorney for the company, Mario Gullucci, says his client denies the allegations.
