In 2003, the FDA changed the classification of noncorrective colored contact lenses from medical devices to cosmetic devices.
The newly approved bill requires the FDA to regulate decorative lenses the the same way as corrective contact lenses by reclassifying them as medical devices.
Rep. John Boozman, R-Ark., a former optometrist, says the bill comes just before a rise in colored contact sales for Halloween. Boozman claims problems with unsupervised contact lens use can range from an eye infection to permanent loss of vision.
Boozman calls the bill requiring FDA's regulation "a simple fix to a very dangerous problem."
Eye doctors have warned that misusing the tinted lenses can lead to vision problems.
