Revealing the truth about the online scams, federal health officials warned that many consumers were actually taking the schizophrenia drug, haloperidol, after being shipped what they thought were a variety of different pills, including Ambien, a sleep aid, and the anti-anxiety medications Xanax and Ativan. Officials have also revealed instances of fraud in the antidepressant Lexapro.
Following reports of several consumers seeking emergency medical treatment for symptoms such as difficulty in breathing and muscle stiffness after taking the pills, FDA conducted a preliminary examination of these drugs sold online and found they contain haloperidol - the schizophrenia drug.
According to AP reports, the pills, which are packaged in plain plastic bags, were mailed in envelopes that bore Greek postmarks. The FDA has strictly warned consumers of the possible dangers of buying prescription drugs on the Web and also posted images of the suspected pills and their shipping packages on its Web site.
