After cordoning off the area associated with the vibriosis illness in southern tip of the Hood Canal, the Washington Department of Health has asked commercial harvesters who work in the area to issue a recall.
The FDA is contacting ditributors linked to Hood Canal in several places, including California, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, New York, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.
According to WebMD, symptoms of vibriosis, caused by the vibrio parahaemolyticus bacteria, include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, headache, fever and chills that usually appear within 24 hours after eating the oysters. Severe disease is rare and people normally get cured in less than three to four days.
The FDA has advised consumers who hve recently purchased oysters to check if the oysters were harvested from Washington.
