The drug is currently used to decrease the risk of strokes and heart attacks in diabetics, who also have risk factors for heart disease, reports The Associated Press
Pfizer says the FDA has now approved Lipitor for use in reducing the chance of stroke in people without diabetes, but who have multiple other risk factors.
Those who are 55 or older, love to smoke, are obese or have high cholesterol, have high blood pressure, a family history of strokes or diabetes are prone to strokes.
Pfizer carried out a study on 2,800 patients with Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the condition, near normal cholesterol, and at least one other risk factor for strokes.
The study reveals that patients on Lipitor suffered 50 percent less strokes than those taking a placebo.
