Merck and Co. announced Wednesday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted a priority review to Gardasil. The review was requested by Gardasil for the expansion of cervical cancer vaccine to adult women, aged 27 to 45 years old.

The review will make the FDA decide with regards to Gardasil within the next 6 months.

Gardasil is a popular cervical cancer vaccine that has already been approved for young girls aged 9 to 26 years old

The review period usually takes about 10 months for FDA but it seems that FDA agrees with the urgency that Merck & Co. has exhibited in expanding the marketing for Gardasil.

An approval from FDA would give Merck a larger income, as it would give them the opportunity to market the vaccine to a whole new age group. Gardasil, being the only cervical cancer vaccine in the market, has been lucrative for Merck, wherein its revenue from the vaccines boosts to over $1 billion.
