A new insomnia drug, Rozerem, has been approved by The Food and Drug Administration, becoming the first drug of its kind not to be classified as a controlled substance.

Because of its non-addictive classification, reports WCVB-TV in Boston, Rozerem can be used for long-term use.

All of the other prescription sleep aid drugs have potential to become addictive and have been classified as controlled substances by the FDA.

Rozerem is chemically related to the natural sleep hormone, melatonin, and works by targeting two receptors in the part of the brain that regulate the body's "master clock."

It will be available by prescription this fall.
