The FDA has approved a new drug to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The agency gave its approval to Vyvanse, made by Shire PLC.

A Shire spokesperson said the company is hoping to switch people from the older ADHD medications to Vyvanse.

The company says the drug is a better choice because it is difficult to abuse. It delays the onset and limits the affects of what has been likened to a amphetamine-like feeling.

The drug is not effective unless it is swallowed. Other medicines used to treat ADHD are Adderall and Ritalin.
