The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) approved a new medication for high blood pressure on Monday.

The Tekturna hypertension tablets manufactured by Novartis AG lowers blood pressure to prevent stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, heart failure and death. It works by inhibiting the production of the enzyme renin by the kidney. The enzyme is responsible for starting the chemical process that increases blood pressure.

According to Mayoclinic.com, Sheldon Sheps, M.D., a Mayo Clinic emeritus high blood pressure specialist who has advised the federal government on high blood pressure guidelines, said Tekturna can be used with other anti-hypertension drugs, such as water pills or diuretics, to make the latter more effective.

The effect of Tekturna lasts for one day with minimal side effects like diarrhea and allergy. However, the drug is not advisable to pregnant women because it can cause severe birth defects and even death in developing fetus.

Tekturna is a combination of the hypertension drug aliskiren and the water pill hydrochlorothiazide. It is the first hypertension drug approved by the FDA in 10 years.
