The FDA announced the voluntary recall of several brands of pet foods for both dogs and cats made by Menu Foods Inc.

The recall affects all of the "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat foods (both in cans and pouches) that were made at Menu Food's location in Emporia, Kansas. These private-label pet foods were produced by the manufacturer between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007, and they were sold in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The recall affects numerous label names such as Iams, Eukabana, Nutro, O'Roy US, Publix and Winn Dixie for dogs, just to name a few. For cats, label names include Iams, Eukabana, Best Choice and Winn Dixie. This is also only a handful of the private label names by which these products are sold to retailers and via the internet.

For a full list of all of the recalled products for both dogs and cats, consumers may visit the manufacturer's website page at http://www.menufoods.com/recall/ .

Consumers may also contact Menu Foods Inc. directly by phone at 1-866-895-2708 for recall information.

The recall began after the manufacturer received a small number of consumer complaints of dogs and cats in the U.S. that had developed kidney failure after eating these products.

So far there have been 10 deaths (one dog and nine cats) reported.

The manufacturer has not only taken the steps to recall all of these affected products, but they are also performing extensive tests to determine the problem. However, to date, the source has not been found.

Consumers should consult with their veterinarian if their dogs or cats show any signs of kidney failure, loss of appetite, lethargy or vomiting after eating this product.

The company has made arrangements for retailers to return the recalled products back to them for testing.

If you are in possession of any of these products, stop feeding the food to your pets immediately and return them to the place of purchase.

The FDA is conducting an ongoing investigation and is working with the manufacturer for the recall.

The FDA is also accepting complaints about the recalled products at its website at http://www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/complain.html .
