Low levels of the nutrient folate in the diet of healthy men has been linked to higher rates of chromosomal abnormalities in their sperm. Folate, also protective against birth defects, is found in leafy green vegetables, fruit and legumes.

The children are also at a greater risk of developing the disease early if additional relatives have had Alzheimer's disease, researchers say.

Dr. Thomas D. Bird, a professor of neurology at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle has found that 42 percent of offspring whose parents both had Alzheimer's went on to develop the disease themselves by age 70

According to the Office for National Statistics, overall conception rates in England and Wales went up by almost 3 percent between 2005 and 2006.
