Ohio Legislation Would Protect Nursing Home Residents From Sex Offenders

The father of an 18-year old schizophrenic mentally retarded girl raped by a nursing home resident is battling for legislation that would mandate posting the names of residents with sex offense records.

Ray McDaniel pushed for the bill, which has been adopted by the Ohio House and is waiting for a Senate hearing. He supports every state requiring its staff to disclose the presence of sex offenders among residents. He hopes this would prevent a repeat of what happened to his daughter, who was abused by a 43-year old male resident, now serving time in prison

Study Says Men Above 40 May Face Fertility-Related Problems

A new study shows that a man's fertility starts to fall in his mid 30s and it could also be considered a factor in determining the reason for failed conception in couples who are trying to conceive.

Researchers from Paris studied more than 12,000 couples undergoing fertility treatments and the results revealed that pregnancy rates drop and miscarriages increase when the father is older than 40. The findings are being presented Monday at the 24th annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Barcelona, Spain

- A brain-eating amoeba is being blamed for the death of six boys and young men in Florida, Arizona, and Texas.

The Center for Disease Control said Friday that primary amebic meningoencephalitis, or PAM, is the cause of the 2007 deaths. The amoeba, called Naegleria fowleri, is the culprit of the condition and is found in warm water such as lakes, hot springs, ponds, and even dirty pools.
