The European Union (EU) has passed new legislation, aimed at providing consistency and accountability to food labeling practices.

New laws will regulate food and drink manufacturers, clearly defining what is "low fat", "high energy" or "low alcohol," and what is not.

Previously, such regulation was up to the individual member-states, and their respective laws. However, the European Parliament has launched a campaign to fight obesity and ill-health.

EU health chief, Markos Kyprianou explains, "The new laws will ensure that consumers will be able to rely on the truth and accuracy of information on food labels."

"It will create a level playing field for food manufacturers wishing to use health or nutrition claims."

The new law places the labels under the jurisdiction of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
