The young girl was admitted to a hospital there on Tuesday, suffering from high fever and muscle pain, a ministry of health spokesman told MENA. She then tested positive for the deadly H5N1 strain of avian flu.
The ministry gave no details to how she contracted the illness.
In Egypt, half of the 25 people who have contracted the virus have died as a result. Most of those infected have been women or girls, who normally look after chickens and turkeys kept in the backyards of homes.
Despite government attempts to educate the population on the dangers of maintaining live poultry in their homes, Egyptians continue to house chickens and turkeys, which has caused Egypt to be the worst hit nations outside Asia, where the disease originated.
