Health officials have expressed alarm over a possible outbreak of dysentery, following the death of two more people last Wednesday.

This brought the total number of deaths to 18 from dysentery with 16 of the victims dying over the past two months.

Village Development Committee (VDC) Secretary Shiv Shankar Barma said that the disease held this large district in its grip for the past two months.

Jiyalal Yadav, 25, of Maryadpur VDC 1 and Nikhat Khatun, 2, of Tejapakad are the most recent victims of the disease according to The Himalayans Times.

Compounding the worry of health officials is the presence of 26 other people suffering dysentery and who are undergoing treatment at a local health station.

District health public officer Rakesh Thakur told the Himalayan Times that they have already sent water samples from this district to the BP Koirala Institue of Health Sciences.

The result showed the presence of cholera germs in the water.

Dysentery broke out after the Saptari district was under floodwaters for several months.

The disease had crossed 19 districts including Madhepura, Bamangamapatti, Rupnagar, Odraha, Haripur, Bathnaha, Mahdewa, and Madhavpur of the district.

More than 50,000 people were advised to drink boiled water only.
