Children infected with Rotavirus, which causes severe diarrhea, can now be treated with nitazoxanide.

According to the Lancet, the virus kills over half a million youngsters in mainly poor countries each year.

Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002, Nitazoxanide is effective in treating gastrointestinal infections in children.

Researchers at the Romark Institute for Medical Research in Tampa, Florida, compared the effects of nitazoxanide when given twice a day for three days and the effects of a placebo in 50 children with severe diarrhea.

They found nitazoxanide relieved symptoms in just over 30 hours, less than half the time of the placebo group, without producing any side effects.
