Maker of the antidepressant drug Paxil is warning doctors that the drug appears to increase the risk of suicide attempts in young adults.

GlaxoSmithKline writes in a letter that it analyzed clinical trials involving 15,000 people.

The New York Times reports the drug company found that 11 of 3,455 depressed people who took Paxil attempted suicide, compared to 1 in 1,978 of those who took a placebo.

The majority of those who made a suicide attempt were between the ages of 18 and 30. People over 30 generally did not have an increased risk of suicide attempts.

Glaxo says one person in the clinical trial successfully committed suicide.

Company spokeswoman Mary Anne Rhyne says, "We are now advising doctors to monitor all patients to make sure their symptoms don't worsen," during the full course of treatment with the drug.
