Previously, Down Syndrome testing had only been recommended for pregnant women 35 or older, who are slightly more susceptible to having babies with the defect.
Down Syndrome is caused by an extra chromosone and causes mental retardation.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is now urging giving all pregnant women the option to be tested for the birth defect.
Tests recently developed are less intrusive than the amniocentesis test which was previously the standard used. Ultrasound tests are now used.
