Among the measures being proposed by Sen. Mark Ridley-Thomas, chairman of the state Senate Committee on Business, Professions and Economic Development, are regular inspections of smaller clinics where such cosmetic procedures are being performed. SB 1454 proposes inspections are least once every three years, according to the Associated Press.
Assemblywoman Wilmer Amina Carter filed the Donda West Law in February proposing a mandatory health check before cosmetic surgery could be done. Carter said West's niece approached her to seek legislation on adding the health test requirement.
West died Nov. 10 after undergoing three types of plastic surgery at the Los Angeles clinic of Dr. Jan Adams, who has denied any wrongdoing in her death. The coroner's autopsy report said West likely died from heart disease and complications after the cosmetic procedures.
Similar legislation has been passed in Florida and Ontario, Canada.
