Children With Older Fathers Likely To Suffer From Bipolar Diorder

Children with older fathers are more likely to develop bipolar disorder, a mental illness that fluctuates between intense depression and mania, Swedish and British researchers said in a study.

Previous studies have linked increasing paternal age with schizophrenia and autism, but not bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression. Children born to fathers ages 30 to 34 were 11 percent more likely to be diagnosed as adults with the condition than those born to men 20 to 24. FDA Approves Gilead Drug For Chronic Hepatitis B In Adults

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved an AIDS drug made by Gilead to treat patients with hepatitis B. The drug Viread has been available in the U.S. as a treatment for HIV infection in adults since 2001.

The FDA is joining regulators in Europe, Turkey, Australia and New Zealand by allowing the drug in U.S. Generically known as tenofovir, the drug is taken in the form of a pill once daily.
