| More than 80 million people in China will die in the next 25 years from lung disease, a new study confirms. Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health say the deaths would be attributed to smoking habits and the common practice of burning coal and wood for cooking and heating. The study, which is published online on Saturday by the British journal The Lancet looked at a 30-year period, spanning the last five and the next 25. More than half of Chinese men population smoke and more than 70 percent of Chinese households use solid fuels that are a major source of indoor air pollution, the study says | | Congress passed Friday a landmark health bill that will give insured employees equal medical benefits for mental illnesses. President Bush signed the bill, together with the $700 billion financial bailout act, into law on the same day. The Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 will not require health plan providers to give mental health coverage to insured individuals but if they do so, they'll have to shoulder the treatment of psychological and addictive disorders like any other diseases | | Burger King Corporation has joined the growing number of fast food chains that are shifting toward healthier eating trends. Some have voluntarily placed calorie counts on their menu, while others have used healthier ingredients. Burger King, the number 2 hamburger chain in the U.S., said Thursday it has shifted to trans fat-free cooking oils in all of its outlets in the country. By Nov. 1, all of its ingredients will have no trans fat at all, including baked products | | Herpes simplex virus that causes genital herpes has infected more than half a billion people and nearly 24 million new cases happen per year, World Health Organization (WHO) said in a new study. In the first global estimate of the prevalence and incidence of this incurable disease by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection, researchers found that 536 million people aged 15-49 are infected with it, which makes it 16 percent of people in that age range | | Researchers now say that controlling the obesity-linked inflammation in a key part of the brain may help keep down weight.
