Experts Link Vitamin D To Breast Cancer

October 17, 2006 - Topics vitamin, breast cancer, cancer, vitamin d and disease
British scientists have come forward with more evidence to prove that vitamin D can help to fight breast cancer. Researchers at London's Imperial College have found that women with advanced breast cancer have lower levels of the vitamin when compared with those in the early stages of the disease.

Previous studies have suggested a correlation between vitamin D deficiency and breast cancer. But most of them cited a genetic variance that increases the risk of breast cancer

A research by scientists at the University of Aberdeen in the UK, has shown that lower levels of Vitamin E in women during pregnancy may pose asthma risks to their children. Non-White Girls Have Lower Vitamin D Level Than White Peers

In a study of otherwise healthy teen girls, researchers from Saint Mary's Hospital for Women and Children in Manchester found that white girls had higher Vitamin D levels compared to their non-white peers, though both the groups were deficient in the organic substance. Dr. M. Zulf Mughal and colleagues warn "Vitamin D deficiency during childhood and adolescence might impair the acquisition of peak bone mass at the end of skeletal growth and maturation, thereby increasing the risk of osteoporotic fractures later in life

Low Libido Not Always Due To Low Testosterone

August 1, 2006 - Topics deficiency, water, study, statistic and sex
While there's a statistical link between men's sex drive and their testosterone levels, in practice there's little meaningful difference in testosterone levels between men with low libido and those with high libido, reported Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Researchers from the New England Research Institutes in Watertown, Massachusetts, evaluated data from a total of 1632 men aged 40 to 70 years. They were assessed at the onset and two more times approximately 9 and 15 years later, when 922 and 623 men, respectively, were available.

At each time, the men completed a self-administered questionnaire asking about the frequency of sexual desire and of sexual thoughts and fantasies, and their hormone levels were measured. Men with scores of less than 7 points out of a total 14 were classified as having a low libido, which included 19 percent of men at the start of the study, 23 percent after 9 years, and 28 percent at 15 years
