| The Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines has condemned the proposal of the Philippine parliament to spend $22 million and buy condoms and birth control pills. Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines said the money is, "Better spent on education and poverty alleviation projects | | To mark the National HIV Testing Day on June 27, the New York Department for the Aging (DFTA) and the Take Care New York campaign, supplied senior centers citywide with HIV/AIDS educational literature and condoms. National HIV Testing Day is an annual campaign produced by the National Association of People with AIDS to encourage at-risk individuals to receive voluntary HIV/AIDS counseling and testing | | After an 82-year-old physician from Howard University Hospital in Washington was recently diagnosed with HIV, the New York City's Department of Aging is now educating older people about the risks of contracting the virus that causes AIDS. As a part of the campaign, the agency will not only distribute free condoms to the senior citizens, but will also offer free HIV testing. While the elderly traditionally lead predominantly abstinent lives, but statistics show that AIDS is on the rise among seniors as HIV-positive Americans are living longer than ever | | Last year more than two million people were treated with HIV drugs in the developing world. That is a sharp increase from fewer than 300,000 only three years ago, says the head of the U.S. National Institute of Infectious Diseases. Dr. Anthony Fauci, an expert on HIV-AIDS, divulged those statistics during his keynote address at the fourth annual international AIDS conference down under in Sydney, Australia. Fauci said those numbers indicate that doctors are losing the fight against AIDS in third world countries | | A study sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has shown that diaphragms are not effective in preventing HIV infection. The study, conducted in South Africa and Zimbabwe, was meant to test a theory that held that the cervix, which is covered by the diaphragm, was most vulnerable to HIV infection | |
