The drug, being marketed as Vaprisol, is intravenous and could be used to treat euvolemic hyponatremia, a condition that can occur in hospital patients suffering from afflictions like kidney failure, cancer, chronic high blood pressure and more.
Euvolemic hyponatremia happens when the body retains large amounts of water, but not sodium. The drug works by increasing the body's urine output, but restricting the loss of electrolytes, including potassium and sodium.
The company is also seeking FDA approval for using Vaprisol in treating hypervolemic hyponatremia, which occurs in patients suffering from heart failure. This illness causes the retention of both sodium and water.
