Scientists have discovered a genetic factor that is identified with a 20 percent -30 percent increased risk of bowel cancer. Previously, only very rare genetic mutations have been associated with the disease. But the new mutation, which is carried by over half the general population, is the most widespread to be discovered.
While researchers don't know which gene or genes are affected, they say that the discovery will greatly aid in their attempts at screening for the disease. 35,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year. It is the second most common form of cancer for women and the third most common form for men.
