Chinese-made Japanese encephalitis vaccine is considered safe and plans are underway to launch a vaccination campaign from May 15 in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

According to Press Trust of India, the health secretary said, "The vaccine is safe. All details have been discussed and all data analysed."

Additionally, the vaccine has also been studied in Sri Lanka while South Korea and China are already using it. Nepal also has used it, but had to discontinue the vaccine due to lack of funding.

Officials said that the Chinese vaccine (SA-14-14-2) was found to have an efficacy between 88 and 99 percent on single dose by the World Health Organization's global advisory committee.
