China has been the leading manufacturer of fake medicines and drugs, illegally copied music, movies, designer clothes and other goods which U.S. officials surmise cost legitimate producers up to $50 billion USD annually.
"China will speed up revisions to national and industry standards on farm produce and processed food products," said Liu Pingjun, chief of the National Standardization Management Commission.
Recently, Chinese-manufactured toothpaste was not accepted by countries in Latin America. While in North America, tainted Chinese wheat gluten was linked dog and cat deaths due to the chemical melamine.
Liu explained that since 2006, they followed 1,965 national food safety standards with 634 of those considered mandatory, although he added that "the standards were on average 12 years old."
