The report by Dr. Zhang Zhengrong of Shanghai's No. 411 Hospital also highlights the widespread ignorance among teenagers about sexual health. Almost half of the 20,000 girls who called the city's pregnancy hot line during the past two years said they had sex with boys they met online.
The report also added that most of the "fathers" declined to accept the child after hearing about the pregnancies, while in some cases the girls did not even know their partners' true names.
Also, there has been a 12 percent increase in the number of calls to the hot line since the start of school holidays in Shanghai. The vacation began two weeks ago and run through August.
Report also add that the callers to the hot lines were generally ignorant about birth control or the other issues related to sex or sexually transmitted diseases. They also considered abortions to be harmless.
According to AP reports, certain similar reports earlier have said that there has been a 30 percent increase in abortions by teens during holidays. Most of them consisted of students between 16 and 18 year of age.
Teenagers in China have easy access to abortion without the requirement that parents be notified. The country strongly advocated abortion as means of limiting most families to just one child.
