Chinese state-run media says officials in Beijing have imposed a ban on ten types of drugs amid rising concerns of fake and tainted products in the food and drug supply.

The Beijing News reported that though the drugs that are banned are genuine, they however gave claims of exaggerated effectiveness in fighting high blood pressure, diabetes, and other ailments that could not be supported in clinical testing.

All the Chinese stores selling these ten types of drugs have been instructed to immediately stop their sales. Also, the media outlets that carried their advertising have been instructed to print retractions.

The announcement came a day after the United States banned farmed seafood from China, citing health risks. Earlier this week, food inspectors in China announced that nearly 180 food factories in China have been closed in the first half of this year. Tons of candy, pickles, crackers and seafood tainted with formaldehyde, illegal dyes and industrial wax has also been seized.
