The honey is imported from New Zealand, where it is produced by bees that feed primarily on the Manuka bush.
Dr. Nick Slevin, the specialist leading the program at Christie Hospital in Didsbury, Manchester, told BBC News, "Manuka honey has special anti-inflammatory and anti-infection properties and is believed to reduce the likelihood of MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infection."
Sixty patients at the hospital are currently involved in a study to determine whether the honey can prevent infections that can be resistant to treatment with antibiotics.
Ancient Egyptians regarded honey as a cure-all. They were the first known people to use honey medicinally.
