Research unveiled that a drug therapy using Rituxan (Rituximab) lessens the number of lesions that form along the nerve fibers of the brain of patients with multiple sclerosis.

Rituxan, used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, provides an important effect in treating multiple sclerosis based on clinical trial.

Researchers say that since this drug targets the immune system's B cells not the T-cells, thus providing a new insight of how MS originates.

The drug decreased the neurological symptoms of the disease. The study is administered by infusion in a 48-week trial.

Sponsors of the trial were Genentech Inc. and Biogen, which markets Rituxan.
