He has also demanded an "aggressive" international endeavor to deal with the spread of bird flu, which has now moved from Asia into Europe and other regions. As a result, Bush wants to stock millions of doses of vaccines and other drugs to fight the avian flu.
"There is no pandemic flu in our country, or in the world, at this time," says Bush. "But if we wait for a pandemic to appear, it will be too late to prepare, and one day many lives could be needlessly lost because we failed to act today."
Bush has demanded $251 million dollars to detect and restrain outbreaks, $2.8 billion to update vaccine development, $800 million for new treatments, $1.519 billion to acquire new vaccines and $1.029 billion to store antiviral medications.
